Negotiation is a word derived from the Latin word "Negotiari" or "Negotiatio" which in Latin translate to denoting an act of dealing with other people. Negotiation, can be defined as an act of discussion between two or more entity, in which each entity is aiming to achieve their goal. Negotiation usually occurs when two or more entities has a different goal, but involves the other entity to reach the goal.
For example, Bob, an employee, wants to get as much pay rise as possible, however Andrew, as the employer, wants to maximise profit by cutting down all operational cost. Note both Bob and Andrew have a different goal, and also involves the other person to achieve the goal, hence a negotiation will occur in order for either party to achieve their goal.
The result of a negotiation are not necessarily always "equal" or "well-matched", however depending on one's Negotiation Skills, one might be able to shift the favour of the outcome of the negotiation closer to their goal and farther from the opposing entity involved. Hence the result might sometimes be skewed to one side and might not seem even-handed or equitable.

In communication, the level of one's Emotional Intelligence or Quotient determines how well they can use communication tools such as Negotiation Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Non=verbal Skills and etc. The higher your EI (EQ), the better you would be able to perform a negotiation.

Other example would be something like negotiating as to what time they should meet up with another person, or even something as simple as what to have for dinner or lunch.

When both parties involved in a negotiation have a firm stand on their expected outcome, negotiation might lead to a conflict. Conflict in a negotiation is very common and usually solved by one party give their way to the other party in exchange for a worthy compensation. When a conflict arise in a negotiation and an agreement cannot be achieved, a third party might need to be called to intervene and help with the negotiation process. Usually the third party would aim for a balanced and equitable outcome to get both side to come to an agreement.
Negotiation are usually based on the purpose of achieving the perfect middle-ground of both sides' desired outcome in which the term Win-Win is coined. As the name implied, it is the situation where both party feel like they have reached their expected outcome and also both party feel that they are not losing anything to the opposing party.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that each and every one of us have gone through some sort of negotiation in our life. And definitely will find ourself negotiating with other people as a part of our daily life. Hence, it is a smart decision to improve our Negotiation Skills.
