Non verbal communication is communication without using words. You use expressions to Conway your message, it can be like your private chat or code words. Non Verbal communication have so many things involved in it.
it appears that there is much to be said from the unsaid. All sort of information can be gathered from:
• Facial expressions
• Gestures
• Posture
• Touching
• Head Movements
• Eyes
• Voice
• Personal space/ Territoriality
• Clothing and adornment
• Environment
• Time
There is a rule of communication which is 7-38-55, in this 55% of our total communication is done by body language and 38% is just vocal signals and the remaining one that is 7% is delivered by words you say. That does not mean verbal communication is not important in our communication, without it our communication and massage is not complete.
Non Verbal communication show emotions and the attitude in our message, without it we will be just like machine talking to others with no feelings in our words. Nonverbal communication can be very confusing and relies on the communicators to know entire groups or clusters of non verbal behavior that are in placement. It is very helpful where there is in-congruence.
Body Language is the most important part of non verbal communication The studying of body language is to become more conscious of this "secret" communication and understand how it works. i.e. how we relate to and perceive different behaviors and respond to them. Body Language can be explained by many different methods, its your different movements with the body you do. It tells us about our attitude, it deceits lies because when ever a person is telling lie or he has some conflict his body movements will be different and easily be judged and you can say by your experience that this person has some problems to back his words. By body language you observe different things and can easily learn new knowledge. Just think that you have to drive a car for first time and your trainer is just telling you what to do without expressing his signals then you will be very confused. Body language build confidence in you because when you are giving a presentation in school or in the office and you use body movements then it create more attention in your listeners and leave a good impression.
Gestures is another very important part of the non-verbal communication, It’s the building blocks of the body because we mainly communication with the motion of the body and the emotions. It is also the movements that express ideas but we have to take care of the culture difference and how to deal with it. Gestures can be insecurity which is the self checking like food. Gestures can be done by shrugging the shoulders and restricting movements like hands in hand or hand in pockets. Another example is thumbs up sign which indicates that everything is okay. Same as the thumbs in the belts or pockets shows the confidence level. Steeping of hands or dismissive waving shows the arrogance of the person and the head in hands or the head shaking shows the despair.
Another important part of the Non verbal communication is the Posture. It relates to the body movements and disposition. It is often used to show different things like respect, aggression, Mirroring or copy of admired person. Eg in china people often bow to shows respect and some time to show defeat.
Polemics is the name of the study that explains how people treat their space and other people in their proximity. It's a subcategory of our nonverbal communication and it is an integral part of non verbal communication. It help us to understand hoe different people treat their space and how it may help us in practical life. If you want to gain some favor from somebody you have to respect their spacing and if you don’t respect it then you will automatically lose it.
Head, Eye and voice is another very important parts of the nonverbal communication. Like if u want to say yes without saying any word you just move your head and the other person will know what you are saying or what is your decision either it is in favor or not. Non verbal communication can vary considerable from culture to culture and all the cultures have their own meaning of the movements they do. Eyes contact or direct gaze can be different things to different people. Some culture support the eye contact and take as a respect and some take it as disgrace to them.
Voice is the most important part of non verbal communication because it tells your personality, mentality and it strengths your message. Suppose you are a police officer and controlling crowd and you have very soft voice then no one listen to you but if you have a strong voice and high pitch then you can be able to control it. Your voice make a big difference in your message. You use to have higher pitch with those you know.
In conclusion we can say that non verbal communication is one of the most important part of life and our communication but it is also fact that if you don’t speak then you are unable to convey your message and when you speak and don’t make the gestures or body movements then that will not create a impact. In a presentation and in office or school you will not able to make a impact if you don’t use non verbal communication.
